Joanne Smiley
I love the concept of InnovAge. One stop shopping! You get everything you need in one place: socialization, nutrition, exercise, fun, comradery, medical care, rehab, and friendship.
Joanne attended University of Colorado and Beth-El School of Nursing, in Colorado Springs. She earned a diploma as a Registered Nurse, returning for continuing education. Joanne says she always knew she would be a nurse practitioner, and became one in 2002, after working in various fields of nursing since 1984.
She says she has been fortunate to do a lot of things in nursing: acute care (med-surg, ortho and neuro ICU), home care, rehab (acute and outpatient), ALFs and SNFs. Joanne turned to psychiatry in 2012 and graduated in 2013 with her PMHNP (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner). With her training and experience she feels she brings the best of both worlds together by being able to combine both medical and psychiatric aspects. “There is medical in all psych and psych in all medical,” she says. “I feel I go home daily knowing I did the best that I could for someone.
Joanne moved to Colorado in 1975. Her father was stationed at the United States Air Force Academy. She is the youngest of five children. “This is the first place I have lived that has four seasons,” she says. “I moved about every two years until we moved here. I have lived in North Carolina, Virginia, Japan, Okinawa, and Hawaii. I liked it here, so when my parents moved back to Virginia, I stayed.”
